Mermaid was the first public commission for both Lichtenstein and the City of Miami Beach. The project was funded by the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places with a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The site, chosen and provided by the City of Miami Beach, changed names twice: originally called the Miami Beach Theater for Performing Arts, it was renamed Jackie Gleason Theater of Performing Arts and finally The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater.
Installed in March 1979 with an official dedication on September 7, 1979.
