In 1987, the executive director of Vorwerk, Dr. Peter Littmann, initiated a project in collaboration with renowned artists and architects, introducing new designs for wall-to-wall carpeting that would be mass produced, unlimited, unsigned and open to the retail market. It was intended for residential, commercial or public spaces and sold per the square meter.

On July 16, 1987 Littmann sent a formal letter to Lichtenstein after a meeting in New York expressing his hope that the artist would create designs for the project. By February 1988, Vorwerk received three collages by the artist (RLCR 3678, RLCR 3680, RLCR 3682) that were consequently developed by their studio into these carpet designs:

RLCR 3678 (#29/0643) also reproduced by Vorwerk as wrapping paper
RLCR 3680 (#30/0764)
RLCR 3682 (#681/1257)

In the autumn of 1988, the designs were launched as part of the new Dialog Art Collection (Contemporary Art: First Edition) at the Fish Auction Hall in Hamburg and the Rolandseck train station in Germany. This First Edition included designs by Gerhard Richter, Mimmo Palladino, Rolf Heide, Sam Francis, Jean Nouvel, Michael Graves, Arata Isozaki, Coop Himmelblau, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, Zaha M. Hadid, Milton Glaser, Richard Meier, and David Hockney.
