Tapestries without a known edition number were designated "unkn" by the authors and numbered in the order listed on a Modern Master Tapestries royalty summary dated January 19, 1982 (RLF Archives). Ed. unkn05 was originally declared the artist copy, then exchanged for the official AC in 1974. One tapestry was designated as the publisher copy by the authors since it was owned by the publishers. Another tapestry was designated the HC by the authors because it replaced an earlier HC damaged by moths. There was a special extended edition (SE) produced for several architects and their clients.
The authors were able to connect most tapestries with their respective auction sales. This was a challenge when auction records did not illustrate the piece that was actually sold. For example, we were unable to confirm the tapestry sold at Sotheby's Arcade, New York, November 7, 1997, lot 398.
Per a Modern Master Tapestries letter to Lichtenstein dated January 29, 1973, the edition was sold out by that time (RLF Archives). After the publisher closed c. 1986–87, at least five or six unauthorized pieces of this design were ordered from Adhiraj Exports. Per the fabricator these were ordered by Charles Zalber of Galerie Lucie Weill & Seligman, Paris (one tapestry in 2001 and one tapestry in 2005); William D. Weber (one tapestry in 2005); Gallery Camino Real in Boca Raton, Florida (two tapestries, date of order unknown) and Barry Cronan Fine Art, London (one tapestry in May 2006). Not all unauthorized tapestries could be located as of 2023, the known pieces are marked with an asterisk (*).
